Abstract
312,682. Matthews Corporation, W., (Assignees of Birkenmaier, T.). May 31, 1928, [Convention date]. Ground anchors.-A hole 11, Fig. 2, is formed in the helical flange 5 on the body portion 1, Fig. 5, of the anchor, and the lower end of the wrench tube 17, which is slipped over the anchor rod 9 screwed into a tapped recess 7 at the head of the anchor body portion, is formed with a recess 21, Fig. 3. The sides of the recess are formed with retaining lugs 27 and, when the wrench tube is slipped over the anchor rod the sloping top 23 of the recess rests on the portion 25, Fig. 2, of the helical flange between the end of the flange and the hole therein. The anchor is driven into the ground by the clockwise rotation of the wrench tube, the leading edge 33, Fig. 3, of the recess therein contacting with the end of the helical flange on the anchor body, and the anchor is retrieved by the anti-clockwise rotation of the wrench tube when the trailing edge 31 of the recess 21 contacts with the end a, Fig. 2, of the hole 11 in the helical flange. An enlarged recess 28, Fig. 5, is formed at the top of the tapped recess 7 in the anchor body, thereby forming a rim against which an unthreaded portion of the anchor rod rubs on the bending of the anchor rod due to side load, thereby preventing breaking of the rod at the upper end of the threaded portion of the rod where the rod is weakened by the thread which at this point is imperfectly formed by the die and therefore prevents the anchor rod from being screwed fully home into the recess 7.
