Abstract

312,569. Ingersoll-Rand Co. June 8, 1928, [Convention date]. Nail-extractors.-A power-operated device for extracting railway spikes has serrated feet 2 to rest against the rail and jaws U, V pivoted at W. the pivot having a roller running in a guide slot Y in the machine frame. The lever ends of the jaws carry rollers running in cam slots s formed in toggles pivoted at h to a head, on a piston rod k, also guided in the slot Y. Arms t on the toggles rest on abutment rallers w carried by the frame. The piston is controlled by a valve G of ordinary design arranged on one of the manipulating handles F. During the first part of the upward stroke the jaws close on the spike without rising. After closure the cam action of the slots in the toggles in conjunction with the abutments w causes a powenful extracting pull on the spike at a. much slower rate than that at which the piston moves. When the rollers on the jaw levers reach the end of the cam slots the lever action of the toggles ceases and the spike is completely withdrawn at the same speed as the piston.
