Abstract

Fats and fatty oils, purifying.-The free fatty acids in fats and oils are neutralized by treatment under pressure and at an elevated temperature, with an alkylene oxide, such as ethylene or propylene oxide, with or without a catalyst, such as metallic acetates, chlorides, phosphates, oxides. The products, presumably containing free hydroxyl groups, may be further esterified. In examples, linseed, soya bean, pea nut and castor oil are heated and agitated under pressure with ethylene or propylene oxide, and sodium or calcium acetate, calcium phosphate, or titanium or aluminium oxide. Excess of the alkylene oxide is distilled off and the product separated from the slime by centrifugal treatment. The product is further esterified by heating with acetic anhydride. In a modification. ethylene oxide passes upwards through a heated tower, packed with Raschig rings impregnated with the catalyst, through which linseed oil circulates, and the excess of the oxide flows into the base of a second tower.
