Abstract

312,129. India Rubber, Gutta Percha, &. Telegraph Works Co., Ltd., and Avery, W. L. Feb. 21, 1928. Springs, arrangement of.-Relates to mountings for the wheels of vehicles and particularly aircraft, of the kind in which resilient suspension members are carried within the wheel mounting. The resilient members are extended or compressed in a direction parallel to the wheel axis by levers pivoted to the mounting from which they extend laterally for connection to the body of the vehicle, the levers being movable in planes at right or other angles to the plane of rotation of the wheel. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the mounting comprises circular flanged plate 3, 4, carrying a cylindrical shell 15 and eccentrically fixed to a tube 1 secured to the axle 2 by a split clip 6 integral with the plate 4. The end of the tube 1 is split so that the clip 6 secures the plate 4 to the tube and the tube to the axle. The wheel 12 rotates on bearings 10, 11. The springs 18 are mounted between the fixed plate 3 and the flange 17 of a collar 16 sliding on the tube 1, the springs being located by pins 19, 20. A pair of L-shaped levers 24, arranged one on each side of the tube 1, are each pivoted at one end on a pin 28 carried by lugs on the plate 3 while their other ends project through vertical slots in the plate 4, and are connected by a strut to the body of the vehicle. The levers are connected at 32 to links 34 which are pivoted to the collar 16, the links being normally horizontal. Longitudinally arranged radius rods are provided to constrain the movement of the axle relatively to the body. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the plates 53, 54, tube 51 and shell 65 are substantially the same as the corresponding parts in Fig. 1 except that the plates are concentric with the tube 52. The resilient elements comprise indiarubber rings 68 and metal separating plates 69, arranged between the fixed plate 53 and the flange 67 of the collar 66 sliding in the tube 51, the rings 68 and plates 69 being formed with inter-engaging annular ribs and grooves 70, 71. The levers 74 extend through vertical slots in the plate 54, are pivoted at 77 to the collar 66, and are connected at 84 to links 82 pivoted at 80 to brackets 79 extending inwardly from the plate 54. Recoil buffer-rings 85 are arranged between the flange 67 and a fixed flange 87. Two of the above described mountings may be used in conjunction with a single wheel, the levers extending on opposite sides of the wheel. In this case, an axle need not be provided, but a short axle may be used with the radius rods connected to its ends.
