Abstract

311,843. Lea, J. E. Feb. 23, 1928. Feeding devices for granular and like materials. -In apparatus for the automatic measurement and delivery of granular and like materials, mechanism is provided for controlling the delivery or rate of delivery of the material and means operated by an accumulation of the delivered material is connected to the mechanism to control automatically the delivery or rate of delivery in proporton to the demand. The conveyer a, Fig. 2, of a measuring apparatus delivers the material into a hopper b in which is a tilting flap c adapted to be moved by the weight of the material to control the speed of the motor driving the conveyer a. The material may pass through a crusher f<1> and the hopper b may supply fuel to pulverizers f. The height of the material in the hopper b, Fig. 4, is regulated by a trampler h connected to a bellcrank k which is adapted to move a slide m in the hopper supplying the material to the conveyer a when a cam k' on the bell-crank is struck by a cam n driven by the conveyer shaft. When the cam k<1> is struck the trampler h rises above the surface of the material in the hopper b and the slide m closes, and when the. trampler descends the slide opens. This operation is repeated until the descent of the trampler h is restricted by the height of material in the hopper so that the slide m is only partly opened or closed and the flow of material is restricted or stopped. In a further modification two tramplers are connected to two levers which are supported on a cross-shaft, the levers being adapted to be raised alternately by a double-throw crank mounted on one end of a pivoted beam, the other end of which supports a feed-gate. The cranks are driven from the conveyer by a chain and sprocket and the height to which the tramplers rise in the hopper effect the control of the opening of the feed-gate.
