Abstract

[Class 143.] In apparatus for automatically controlling the rate of flow of a material from a container by means of a controlling device loaded by the flowing material, the adjustment of the inlet or outlet of the container is effected from the controlling device by a servo-motor. As shown in Fig. 2, a hopper 1 is provided with a rotary feed-roller 2 driven by a servo-motor comprising a variable-speed friction-gear of known kind 11, 10, 12, the idle roller 10 being displaced by the movement of a control valve 8 operated by the movement of a spring-suspended member 5 in the path of the material flowing in a receptacle 3. The feed roller 2 may be inserted at the outlet of the container 3. The feed roller may be replaced by a conveyer, band, worm, elevator &c. In Fig. 5, material in a storage container 1 is discharged by a tipping container 4 of an automatic weighing machine, this tipping container returning to its filling position when the head h of material in the receptacle 3 has sunk below the opening of the tipping container in its tipped position. The head h is regulated by a discharge valve 2 moved by a servo-motor 10 controlled by a valve 8 connected to a lever arm 7 of an impact plate 5. The plate 5 is balanced by a spring 6 and weights 14. In a modification the outlet of the container 1 is controlled by the slide 2 through the material falling on the impact plate 5, the material from the plate 5 being discharged into the tipping container 4 and then emptied into the receptacle 3. In further modifications the variable speed gear 11, 10, 12 and rotary feed roller 2, Fig. 2, may be replaced by the servo-motor 10, Fig. 5, and a sector-shaped valve respectively. The sector-shaped valve may be placed in the discharge outlet of the container 1 or 3. A hydraulic piston, receiving fluid pressure from the servo-motor 10, may be connected to a sliding valve 4 so that it is opened by the fluid-pressure and closed by weights. Several pistons may be supplied by fluid-pressure from the servo-motor and the valves may be weighted differently so that they may be raised in succession. The pistons may operate a signal when the valve is raised or cut in an electric motor, for setting other machines in operation &c.
