Channels and reservoirs in engine crank casings.-The crank case of a motor-vehicle engine is divided into compartments by one or more transverse partitions b provided, below the normal oil level, with an opening a. Cages d having slots f on their undersides project from each side of the partition and contain balls e. The cages are inclined slightly downwards so that, while oil is free to circulate through the openings a when the vehicle is on the level, the ball in one of the cages moves to close the opening a when ascending or descending a gradient, so as to prevent accumulation of oil at one end of the casing.
