Abstract
310,550. Carter, B. C. Oct. 28, 1927. Density separators; discharging; driving; cooling.-A centrifugal machine is combined with a cooler, the combination being particularly applicable for cleaning and cooling oil on aircraft, motor cars or other vehicles, the cooling being effected after the cleaning. The rotor of the apparatus is driven by the discharging fluid. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the separator has a stationary casing 1 enclosing a rotor having radial passages through which impurities pass to collect on an outer imperforate wall. A hollow boss 6 at the lower end of the rotor serves as an inlet passage for the liquid to be treated, and the cleaned liquid is discharged through outlets 8, 9 directed tangentially, and the rotor is thereby driven. The outlets 8, 9 are arranged inside the cooler 10 which consists of a casing with internal and external fins 44, 45. An outlet for the cooled clean liquid is provided in the hollow standard 22 which supports the casing 1, and outlets 23, 15 are provided in another standard for separated gas and the liquid which has leaked or been bye-passed into the separator casing 1. Any solid matter collects on the outer imperforate wall of the rotor. The screen 43 in the cooler shields the rotor from issuing liquid and the deflector 43<x> keeps the separated liquid and gas apart. In the form shown in Fig. 5 the rotor has a number of channel-section annular trays 16 with outer interlocking flanges; the trays are carried on a frame with radial vanes 17 round the central gas tube 20. The inlet 25 is connected to an annular passage 48 connected by radial ports 49 to the hollow boss 6 which forms the axial inlet to the rotor. The wall 10 forms the casing of the separator and also encloses the cooling chamber; the upper part of the casing is secured to the lower part by swivel bolts 46. The top part of the casing can be removed to give access to the separator which is centred by supporting studs 50. A spring controlled relief valve 35 permits the escape of liquid through the passage 52 when the pressure in the system rises to a predetermined value. In another modification the relief valve and the entrance for the liquid are arranged at the top of the separator. In another modification the cooler 10, Fig. 8, projects beyond the cowling 54 which covers the oil tank 53 of an aeroplane or other vehicle. A detachable shield 54<x> can be used to control the cooling effect. When the relief valve is open, oil passes through the pipes 15, 15<x> to the sump 55 on the suction side of the pressure pump. In another modification only a part of the oil is centrifuged. In the modification shown in Fig. 15 the liquid flows from the entrance 25 through the perforate central tube 3; heavy liquid is collected from points near the outer wall 5 and passed through radial conduits 57 to the central conduit 58 and discharge cock 60, while the light is discharged from nozzles 9 into the cooling chamber 10 from which it is taken by the outlet 61. Various forms of separator are described. Specification 258,204 is referred to.
