Abstract

310,270. Powley & Sons, Ltd., R., and Powley, M. Oct. 4, 1928. Bottles, jars, and the like, washing.-In a machine in which the bottles 7 are carried in pockets 6 arranged around a wheel 1 which is rotated intermittently within a casing 3 containing cleansing solution, the bottles being discharged by gravity, the introduction and discharge of the bottles take place at the same side of the wheel. In the construction shown, a number of bottles to be soaked are placed on a tray 23 and are fed forwardly through an opening 1<a> in the casing 3 by rollers 11 which are mounted on a shaft 12 and are actuated through the medium of links and levers and a roller 17<a>, by means of a cam 19 on a driven shaft 20. The opening in the casing 3 may be provided with a shutter normally closed when the rollers 11 are in the retracted position and adapted to open when the rollers are being moved forwardly. The bottles are. discharged through an opening 8 normally closed by a pivotally-mounted door 9 which is opened by means including links and levers and a roller 17<b> actuated by a cam 33. The wheel 1 is rotated step-by-step, by means of a wheel 5 formed with recesses 5a for engagement with a crank 4. To hold the wheel against rotation during the feeding and discharge of the bottles, a pivotallymounted spring.pressed lever 36<c> is provided on the machine, the lever having at one end a roller 39 for engagement in a recess in the wheel 5. The lever has a pin-and-slot connection with a rod 38 connected to the crank 4 so that the crank and the roller 39 are alternately in engageemnt with the wheel 5. To the inside of the wheel 1 are secured buckets 27 adapted' to pick up liquid with labels and other foreign matter and discharge it to a gutter 28, which delivers to a rotary filtering drum 31a, the liquid being returned to the casing by a pipe 32.
