Coating webs. - A spreading knife or gauge for use in machines for coating webs, as in the manufacture of leather cloth or rubber cloth comprises a flat metal bar a the length of which is greater than the width of the web. The front part of the bottom face of the bar is flat or it may be slightly rounded as shown at b and from the point where the flat or slightly rounded portion ends, the back of the bottom face is sloped upwardly as at c to form an angle of from 30‹ to 80‹ with the front vertical edge. The " dope " is applied at the rear edge, and the knife may be inclined backwardly or forwardly.
