Abstract

310,172. Courtaulds, Ltd., and Morton, E. A. April 10, 1928. Treating substances with liquids.-The centrifugal boxes, in which cakes of artificial threads and the like are spun, are fitted with devices fixed at the centre of the bottoms of the boxes, so that a jet of liquid, for example washing liquid, projected more or less vertically downwards on to the device is broken up into spray, which permeats all parts of the cake with the result that a cake of viscose silk, for example, can be washed in a few minutes and then dried without deterioration. In the apparatus shown in the drawing, a stream of water or other liquid is projected downwards through a nozzle C, provided with a ball and socket arrangement, on too a circular disc fitted to the centre of the bottom of the box, so that it rotates therewith. This disc comprises a central domed portion E upon which the liquid impinges and radial ridges F, surrounding the domed portion and so arranged that the outer ends of the hollows between the ridges are lower than the inner ends of the hollows.
