Plastic compositions.-Nitrocellulose products and the like, such as cellulose acetate, are coloured, for example for the preparation of pigmented celluloid, by incorporating the colour with the product whilst either or both of these ingredients are in the water wet condition, with or without the addition of a plasticizing agent or a softening agent or both plasticizing and softening agents, the water being substantially removed during the incorporation process by rolling between the rollers at a suitable temperature. Coloured lacquers or enamels can be made by treating the substantially dry products obtained with suitable solvents, resins or similar substances being added, if desired. By this incorporation process, the pigment is ground down to the degree of dispersion necessary to give a material of high gloss simultaneously with the substantial removal of the water present initially. Water may be introduced with any or all of the constituents. In examples, mixtures comprising wet nitrocellulose, tricresyl phosphate and a water paste of monolite scarlet or wet nitrocellulose, linseed oil and prussian blue containing water or wet nitrocellulose, linseed oil, tricresyl phosphate and prussian blue containing water are ground on warm rolls until the water is removed and the pigment ground to the correct degree or dispersion. The resulting masses give enamels of high gloss and good covering power when dissolved in appropriate solvents. Heated or cold rollers may be employed in the incorporation process and gelatinized nitrocellulose such as film scrap, or unpigmented celluloid may be used as well as ungelatinized nitrocellulose.
