Shafts.-A flange is formed on a tube at a point between its ends by upsetting the metal by end pressure to form an enlarged part or collar, which is made narrower and of larger diameter, corresponding to the thickness and diameter of the flange desired, by a further upsetting operation or operations. The tube 1 intended to form part of the back-axle casing of a motor car is provided with a flange in this manner near one end for bolting the tube to the brake-anchoring plate. Apparatus for completing the flange in three operations comprises a two part die block 2, 3 with three recesses 4, 4a, 4b coacting with three plungers 5, 5a, 5b, each with a mandrel 8 attached to the plunger holder by a pin 9 and formed with a conical part 10 terminating in a shoulder 12, 12a, 12b. In the first operation the heated metal near the tube end is upset by the pressure of the shoulder 12 on the end of the tube into the annular space 13 forming a collar 14 thereon as shown in Fig. 2. The die block 2, 3 is then open, the tube transferred to the next recess 4a and the collar 14 reduced in width and enlarged in diameter to the shape of the annular space 13a by the second plunger 5a. The tube is finally transferred to the third recess 4b and the flange 14b completed by the plunger 5b, as shown in Fig. 4. Instead of being formed as a recessed die the die block 2, 3 may be formed with a projection 15, Fig. 5, coacting with a recess 16 in the plunger 5.
