Abstract
309,727. Hales, G. H. April 2, 1928. Planting-tools, hand.-A garden tool for making holes in the ground for planting &c. comprises a tube to be forced into the ground and then withdrawn to extract a column of earth, and a cutter situated above the tube to cut, divide, or spread the column of earth ejected from the tube when it is again forced into the soil. The steel or other tube a is tapered or reduced in diameter at its lower end. It may be secured to a cast bridge member b consisting of an annular part c and two side walls d terminating in a socket e for a handle f. The tube a may be spot welded to the bridge member b, or the letter may be cast on it. Lugs g may project outwardly from the bridge member b. The dividing or spreading cutter h may consist of a downward extension of the socket e. It has converging concave sides terminating in a cutting edge parallel to and vertically above a diameter of the tube a. When the tool is used on turf the pieces cut may be removed before reaching the cutter h.
