Abstract
A planting tool has a tubular body and handle and is designed and shaped 4 so that numbers of planting holes can be made quickly and easily while standing and without compacting the soil. <IMAGE>
Description
PLANTING TOOL FOR GARDENERS AND GROWERS
This invention relates to a planting tool for gardeners and growers.
There are four main kinds of planting tool, viz:
Spades for excavating trenches;
Trowels for excavating holes;
Dibbers for making holes by pushing them into the soil;
A short hollow tool for making a hole by extracting a core of soil.
Spades are expensive and laborious to use.
Good trowels are fairly expensive and involve bending or kneeling on the ground.
Dibbers compact the soil around the hole and involve bending or kneeling on the ground.
The short hollow tool also involves bending low or kneeling on the ground.
In a preferred form there is provided a planting tool which consists of a hollow plastic tube of suitable length sharpened and shaped at one end to penetrate the soil without compacting it, a tubular handle at a right angle through the tube near the other end to enable the tube to be rotated clockwise and anti-clockwise in the soil, and to withdraw a core of soil, without bending low or kneeling or compacting the soil.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1. Shows the tool in three dimensions;
Figure 2. Shows the tool in elevation;
Figure 3. Shows the tool in plan view;
Figure 4. Shows how the tool is operated.
Referring to the drawing the tool consists of a hollow plastic tube of suitable length, sharpened and shaped at one end, and a tubular handle re2easably secured to the tube by being slightly offset from the diameter.
In order to make a planting hole the tube is pressed doxvnxvards into the soil and rotated clockwise and anti-clockwise by the handle as illustrated in fig 4.
By reversing this action a core of soil is extracted and is deposited on the surface by shaking or tapping the tool.
Claims (5)
- I A planting tool comprising a tube of suitable length, sharpened and shaped at one end to penetrate the soil; a handle near the other end to enable the tool to be presented to the soil, rotated and withdrawn to extract a core of soil leaving e hole.
- 2 A planting tocl as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the length of the tool enables it to be used without bending low or kneeling.
- 3 A planting tool as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the design and light weight of the tool enable it to be used by elderly, disabled or infirm users.
- 4 A planting tool as claimed in Claims 1, 2 an2 3 whereby planting holes can be sade- more quickly end e?sily.
- 5 Aplanting tool as claimed in any preceding Cleim end which enables planting holes to be made without compacting the soil.Ó A planting tool substantially as described herein with reference to figures I to 4 of the accompanying drawing.
