Abstract

309,613. Beshow, B. M. Nov. 15, 1927. Counters of scoring type with printing apparatus; transfer mechanism.-A scoring and recording device for golf comprises a series of concentric, nested, ring-shaped dials 56 - - 59, and 53, Figs. 10 and 12, that are viewable through slots in a face plate 87 and serve to indicate, in order of decreasing diameters, the hole being played, the score at that hole, the units of the total score, the tens of the total score and the number of holes won by the player. Ratchet teeth are provided on the dials for their step-by-step advancement under the action of pawls operated by push-rods. Resetting means are provided to retract the operating and detent pawls and thereby allow the dials to be returned by spiral springs. The number of strokes taken at each hole is automatically recorded on a circular card 219. The mechanism is contained within a cylindrical casing 2 enclosed in an outer casing 3, Figs. 12 and 14, similar to that of a wrist watch. The inner casing 2 is divided by a false bottom 7a into two parts, of which the upper part is subdivided by ring-shaped members into a central cylindrical compartment surrounded by concentric annular compartments within which the dials are rotatably mounted. The score and units dials 57, 58 are advanced simultaneously by the depression of a push rod 101, Fig. 3, that acts through lever 107, link 143,. lever 136 and operating pawls 141, 145 upon ratchet teeth 61, 62 formed on downwardly depending flanges of the dials. Return of the dials is prevented by detents 133, Fig. 2, and 112. Fig. 1 respectively. The score dial is reset after each hole has been played by an outward movement of the push-rod 101, Figs. 2 and 3, causing through lever 107, slotted link 110 and link 131, the rotation of a lever 122, whereby the detent 133 is retracted and a shield 123a interposed beneath the operating pawl 141, which is simultaneously retracted by means of the link 143. As the first stroke at each hole is indicated the hole dial 56 is advanced one step by means of a spring pawl 70, Fig. 10, that is carried by the score dial, and projects through an aperture in one of the subdividing members of the casing into engagement with one of a series of slots cut in a downwardly directed flange of the hole dial. During further movements of the score dial the pawl 70 slides idly along the inner face of the subdividing member. Transfer from the units dial 58 to the tens dial 59 is effected at every tenth stroke by means of a pawl 78 acting in similar manner to that described above with reference to the pawl 70. After transfer, the units dial is automatically reset by the engagement of a projection 79 thereon, with a projection 118, Fig. 1, on a lever 111, whereby the lever is rotated, the detent 112 withdrawn through a slot 26 in the false bottom 7a and the operating pawl 145 disengaged by a shield 116. The lever 111 is temporarily retained in its rotated position by the engagement of a cup-shaped depression 121 thereon with a projection 20 on the casing. Upon the units dial reaching its zero position, however, the projection 79 strikes a second projection 117 on the lever which is thereby reset. The units, tens and hole dials, 58, 59, 56, are simultaneously reset by an outward movement of a push-rod 103, Figs. 5 and 14, attached at its inner end to the central joint of a toggle 109. One end of the toggle is connected to a lever 156 carrying the detents 157<a>, 162, for the hole and tens dials, respectively. The other end of the toggle is connected to a lever 146, Fig. 14, which actuates the lever 111 to reset the units dial in the manner previously described, and upon release positively returns the lever 111. The dial 53 is advanced, to indicate the holes won by the player, by the depression of a push-rod 102, Fig. 14, whereby an operating pawl 177 rotates a ratchet wheel 174 connected to the dial. The dial is reset by an outward movement of the push rod 102, whereby the pawl 177 is moved out of engagement by a stop 171, and detent 178 is retracted by the engagement with a tail thereon of a pin 182 on a connecting lever 108. The push rods 101, 102 are retained in their normal positions by spring clips 223, 224. Printing mechanism. The score at each hole played is printed on a circular removable card 219, Fig. 12, by printing-mechanism operated from the resetting means for the score dial. The mechanism comprises a type-disc 206, Figs. 11 and 12, provided with a series of radially extending type-bars 207 numbered consecutively from 0-18. The disc is advanced in step with the score dial by means of a pawl 140, Fig. 3, carried by the score-dial advancing lever 136. The pawl extends downwardly through an aperture in a plate 188 secured to the casing and co-operates with a series of raised lugs 215 on the type-disc. The disc is held against the action of a return spring by a detent 134, Fig. 2, carried by the score-dial resetting lever 122. The score card is provided with a serrated central aperture for engagement with a correspondingly serrated shoulder on an annular member 201, Fig. 12. A printing-ribbon 222 is lightly attached to the card in such a manner as to be readily removed after use. The score card is advanced one step during each initial movement of the type-disc by means of a spring pawl 210, Fig. 11, that is secured to the disc and projects through a slot in an annular wall 198 into engagement with one of a series of grooves 202 in the annular member 201 that carries the score card. During further advancement of the type-disc, the pawl 210 slides idly around the outer face of the wall 198. The annular member 201 is held in set position by means of a spring detent 204 engaging one of a series of grooves in the internal bore of the member. During a resetting operation of the score dial, a pawl 126 on the resetting lever 122, Fig. 2, rotates a tripping-wheel 128, Fig. 11<b>. Inclined projections 127 on the wheel engage beneath the free end 187 of a pivoted printing- hammer 186 thereby placing the spring end 186b in compression. The first part of the rotation releases the part 187 of the hammer and allows the part 186<a> to strike that type bar 107 that has previously been positioned below it, whereby the numeral on the bar is imprinted on the card by means of the ribbon 222. The remaining part of the rotation of the wheel serves to re-cock the hammer. The type-disc is reset simultaneously with the score dial by the retraction of detent 134 and operating pawl 140. In a modification, the grooves on the outer and inner surfaces of the annular member 201 are replaced by ratchet teeth, and the score card is provided with three positioning pins adapted to engage between the teeth of the outer set.
