Heating-fittings; air, controlling direction of flow of; wheeled tracks, moving; helical bladeconveyers.-In apparatus of the kind in which material is dried either by bringing the material into direct contact with heating surfaces, or by the transmission of heat by a drying medium, e.g. air or steam, from heating surfaces to such material, and wherein the evaporated water is condensed on cooling surfaces, heat is recovered by utilizing the same medium for heating the heating surfaces and cooling the cooling surfaces. The medium after being heated is caused to pass through ducts from warmer to successively colder parts of the drying room, and having reached the coldest part it is further cooled and then is passed through pipes from cooler to warmer parts of the drying room and from thence to the heater. Figs. 1 and 2 show a drying room 1, through which material mounted on trucks is passed, provided with heating tubes 2 and cooling tubes 3 through which medium is circulated past a heater 5 and refrigerator 10. Air is circulated by fans 4 to pass over the heater 2 and deposit moisture on the cooling tubes 3. The direction of air circulation and flow of the heating medium may be reversed and in a modification one of the series of tubes may be mounted below the trucks. In the form shown in Figs. 6 and 8 the direction of flow of the air is varied by shutters 11 and fans 12. Fig. 10 shows a cylindrical drying chamber through which granular material is fed by helical blades 17. The walls are hollow to form ducts 2, 3 for the heating and cooling medium which is circulated by a fan past a heater at the feed end of the apparatus.
