Abstract

309,212. Mead, A. A., and Mead, McLean, & Co., Ltd. Dec. 8, 1927. Valve apparatus.-A ventilator for railway &c. vehicles comprises a louvre device b and a covering-device c movable out of a closed position in one plane to an open position in another plane, and the mechanism for opening and closing the louvre device is so interconnected with the mechanism for operating the covering-device as simultaneously and positively to open or close the covering-device with the corresponding movement of the louvre device. The louvres bare vertically disposed and are mounted in swivel shoes e pivoted in the longitudinal frame bars, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, such shoes being provided with arms k pivotally connected with a bar m having a parallel-ruler motion. The covering-device may be in the form of horizontal louvres c mounted in swivel shoes f having arms n pivotally connected with a movable bar p. The bar m is provided with a longitudinally-slotted projection s adapted to be engaged by a pin v projecting from a lever t pivoted to the casing at u. The end of the lever t is provided with a fork w for engaging a projection r on the swivel shoe f of the uppermost louvre c. Operation of the bar m therefore effects movement of both sets of louvres. Bowden wire mechanism, connected to studs attached to the bar m and movable in V-shaped slots in the upper bar of the casing, is provided for moving the bar m. The vertical bars b in the closed position lie edge to edge. and the bars c may have overlapping or bevelled edges or be fitted along one edge with an overlap strip of metal, wood, rubber, &c. When the covering-device consists of a flap 5, Fig. 6, the fork w of the lever t engages a pin 9 on the upper end of a lever 7, the lower end of which is connected by a pin and slot with an arm 10 fixed to the flap. The frame of the flap 5 is recessed to receive a packing 11 for sealing the flap against the frame a when in the closed position. When the covering-device consists of a framed glass plate 12 movable bodily from the frame a, a slotted projection s is provided at each end of the bar m and two forked levers t are provided. Two levers 15, Fig. 8, are pivoted at 16 at each side of the frame a and are pivotally connected to lugs 17<a> on the plate 12. The adjacent ends of the levers 15 are slotted to engage pins 19 on levers 13 pivoted at 14 and the upper ends of the levers 13 engage the forks u of the levers t. If desired, apertures 21, Fig. 4, may be provided in the base of the frame a for the removal of any matter deposited in such frame, and the frame a may also be formed in two parts hinged together as at 22, Fig. 6.
