Depositing-machines; cleaning moulded articles.-In a brushing- machine for coating, glazing, brushing, and otherwise treating edible ware, such as confectionery and sweetmeats, a rotary or band brush is used which is reciprocated transversely to the direction of the feed movement of the confections, or alternatively the conveyer may be reciprocated or moved bodily in a circular of elliptical path, these movements being superimposed on the general feeding movement. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, the goods are moved on a spiked conveyer 44 beneath a rotary brush 30 having bristle sections 59 spaced by sleeves 58. Alternatively the bristles may be arranged helically and the helix may be interrupted as shown in Fig. 5. The brush shaft and drum may be perforated at 56 to supply steam or other fluid to the bristles. The conveyer 4 consists of links and passes over a plate 2 pressed resiliently upwards by springs 21. The plate 22 is carried on a table 13 slidable on vertical guides 14 and adjustable vertically by a lever 18. The brush 30 is geared with the shaft of a roller 32 which contacts with the bristles and applies coating material thereto or removes foreign material therefrom. The roller shaft is driven by chain and sprocket from a shaft 9 or, alternatively, is driven at a variable speed by stepped cones as shown in Fig. 2. The shaft 9 is driven from a main shaft 2 by bevels 4, 6 and worm gearing 8, 10. The connecting shaft 5 has a crank 7 connected by a rod 26 to a rocking lever 27 which imparts a straight line reciprocation to the brush 30. Alternatively, means may be provided for moving the brush bodily in a circular or elliptical path parallel to the conveyer surface and an oscillating movement about a vertical axis may be superimposed on the other movements. The oscillating movement may be greater in one direction than in the other, so that the brush, after a number of oscillations, turns right around. The goods are impaled on the spikes 43 on the conveyer 44 by a roller 38 on bell crank levers actuated by springs 42 and contacting normally with stops 41. The goods are detached from the conveyer 44 by an inclined grid 50 and are delivered to a conveyer 49 which may pass through a drier. In a modification, Fig. 13, the brush 30 co-operates with a brush 62 beneath the conveyer 40, the goods being lifted from the conveyer by the brush 62. The brushes 30, 62 may be replaced by band brushes which are reciprocated in unison, or in opposite directions, or only one brush may be reciprocated. In another modification, the conveyer 44 is provided with bristles and acts similarly to the brush 62 in conjunction with the brush 30. A blower may be provided for removing flour &c. brushed from the goods. In Fig. 17, the invention is applied to a dividing machine, the brushing apparatus being a detachable unit enclosed in a cowl 81. The divided pieces are delivered on the conveyer 44 of the dividing machine and the waste pieces are taken by a conveyer 78 to a receptacle 80. The brush shaft and the roller shaft are journaled in the end walls of the cowl 81, and a shaft 65 having a crank 66 for reciprocating the brush is journaled externally of the cowl and is driven through bevels from a belt 71 actuated by a motor or by a shaft of the dividing machine. The roller 32 is rotated from the dividing machine, by a chain drive 75<1> and the brush is geared to the roller. As dividing machines operate intermittently, the brush is applied for coating or dusting, either whilst the goods ara stationary or whilst they are moving. This is effected by lowering the brush at the required times, or by using a brush with bristles extending only partly around its circumference.
