Centreless grinding; guides and rests.-In a grinding machine having a grinding and a regulating wheel rotating in a plane perpendicular to the path of feed of the work and provided with an interposed work support, work pieces are fed axially along the support and between the wheels by gravity. The machine comprises a base 10 provided with upper and lower horizontal guides 11, 12, Fig. 3, on which are mounted slides 13, 16, Fig. 2, the former having bearing 19 for the spindle 20 of a grinding wheel 21 while the latter has bearings 24 for the spindle 25 of an abrasive regulating wheel 26. Due to the different levels of the guides 11, 12, the spindles 20, 25 are inclined to the horizontal at an angle, preferably of 30‹, and the work support 49 is inclined longitudinally at the same angle whilst laterally it is inclined downwards towards the regulating wheel. A screwed spindle 32, Fig. 2, provided with a hand wheel 36 is axially restrained bv collars 33 on the base 10 and engages a screwed lug 31 on the slide 16, and a screwed sleeve 35, provided with a hand wheel 40 is axially restrained by collars 39 and engages a screwed lug 37 on the slide 13. The work support 49 is mounted in a slot 47 in a carrier 41, Fig. 4, which is laterally adjustable by means of a slot and bolt 44 on a portion 29<a> of the casing 29 surrounding the wheels, and is adjustable vertically by a wedge 48. In operation, the wheels are adjusted to the correct distance apart and are rotated in the same direction by belts on pulleys 22, 27, work pieces 51 placed between guides 52, 53 on the support being thereupon fed by gravity between the wheels.
