Azo dyes, chromium compounds of.-Chromium compounds of chromable azo dyestuffs are obtained bv treating the dyestuffs with chromium salts of mono- or poly-sulphonic acids of benzene or its homologues or of naphthalene. The products give brighter dyeings than the chromium compounds obtained by other methods. The following examples are specified. (1) The sodium salt of the dyestuff p-aminosalicylic acid # phenol is heated under reflux for 8 hours with an aqueous solution of chromium benzenesulphonate; the product dyes wool from an acid bath pure greenish yellow shades fast to fulling and light. (2) The mono-sodium salt of the dyestuff 1:4- naphthylaminesulphonic acid # salicylic acid is heated under reflux for 2 hours with an aqueous solution of chromium 1 : 5 - na.phthalenedisulphonate; the product, dyes wool bright reddish yellow shades. (3) The dyestuff 1:2-aminonaphthol-4-sulphonic acid # 1-phenyl-3-methyl- 5-pyrazolone is heated under pressure at 130‹ C. for 10 hours with an aqueous solution of chromium 1 : 5-naphthalenedisulphonate; the sodium salt of the product dyes wool from an acid bath bright rose shades in contradistinction to the dull bluish red shades given by the corresponding product obtained by means of chromium formate. (4 The mono-sodium salt of the dyestuff 1 : 2-aminonaphthol-4-sulphonic acid # 1 : 8-naphtholsulphonic acid is heated under reflux for 2 hours with an aqueous solution of 1 : 5-naphthalenedisulphonate; the product dyes wool pure greenish blue shades fast to light; analogous products are obtained by heating the dyestuffs 1 :2-aminonaphthol-4-sulphonic acid #alpha- or #-naphthol under pressure at 120‹ C. for 6 hours with an aqueous solution of chromium benzenesulphonate. (5) The mono-sodium salt of the dyestuff 5-nitro- 2-aminophenol # 2-naphthylamine-5 : 7 - disulphonic acid is heated under reflux for 10 to 12 hours with an aqueous solution of chromium 1 : 5- naphthalenedisulphonate, or chromium benzenedisulphonate, or chromium naphthalenetrisulphonate; the product dyes wool from an acid bath pure bluish green shades whereas the corresponding product obtained by means of chromium formate gives yellower shades. 'The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use as chroming agents of chromium salts of aromatic acids in general. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
