Roasting furnaces.-In a furnace for roasting or agglomerating ores the charge is treated on a travelling grate c, which remains stationary during the roasting &c. operation and is only moved for charging and discharging. The grate is covered by an ignition hood, and the space beneath the grate forms a suction chamber, into which opens an exhaust pipe d having branches arranged to equalize the draught over the whole grate area. The ignition hood is lagged with insulating-material, and it preferably remains in position during the working of the furnace. After the charge has been ignited the gas supply may be reduced or cut off, but the air supply is maintained and is heated in passing through the hood. The charge is fed on to the grate from a hopper a, and a protective layer of limestone may be supplied from a hopper b. The discharge end of the apparatus is closed by a flap f, and the belt conveyer on to which the roasted material is delivered may be enclosed to prevent escape of dust.
