Abstract
307,647. Pollak, J. E., (Hermsdorf- Schomburg-Isolatoren Ges.). April 5, 1928. Insulators.-The body of a lead-in insulator is formed with an annular channel along the part which is surrounded by the supporting-flange, and the inner surface of the channel has a conducting coating which is connected electrically with the supporting flange. The space between the flange and the insulator body reduces the formation of the corona at the junction of the flange and the body, and it also reduces the risk of breakdown by puncture. The same construction may be applied to the junction between the insulator and the lead-in conductor. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the insulator body J is connected by a supporting-flange F with the cover of a transformer, for example, and a gap A is left between the insulator and the flange. The surface of the part of the insulator around the gap is provided with a conducting covering L by metal spraying or other suitable means, and metal wedges are inserted in the gap A to secure the insulator in place and to connect the flanges electrically with the metallic layer L. A hollow space or channel H may be provided above and below the flange, and the coating L may be extended into this channel. The petticoat W which forms the channel H may be suitably shaped to facilitate the insertion of the insulator in the flange in order to avoid making the flange in two parts.
