Blocks and shoes acting on drums.-In an internal expanding brake having a forward shoe 3 adapted to be applied by the cam 2 and connected by a floating pivot 9 with a rearward shoe 4, the floating pivot is supported on a swinging link 10 the movement of which is controlled by operatively connecting it with the forward shoe, so that adjustment of the forward shoe moves the floating pivot to take up clearance of the rear shoe and swinging of the shoes about the location points at the top of the brake is prevented. The connection comprises an arm 16 integral with the link 10 and having a rounded end engaging a guiding slot in a stud 19 which is adjustable in a slot 21 in the forward shoe 3. The slot 21 is approximately directed to the axis of the cam 2. The arm 16 is slightly resilient in order not to interfere with the application of the brake. The rear shoe engages by means of a roller 5 an eccentric part of the cam 2 so that this shoe is moved slightly on brake application in a contrary direction to the rotation of the drum to prevent excessive servo action and to assist the braking effect when the vehicle travels backwards. The rear shoe has a longer arc of contact than the forward shoe. Specification 291,978 is referred to.
