N-substituted cyano-formarylides of the general formula:- where Ar represents a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic residue, and R a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic or aliphatic residue which may be linked directly with the residue Ar to form a closed ring, are prepared from the corresponding N-carbonyl chlorides by treating the latter dissolved or suspended in pyridine with hydrocyanic acid at ordinary or elevated temperatures. Examples describe the conversion of N- carbonyl chlorides of methyl- and ethyl aniline into the corresponding nitriles, and the nitriles derived from the N-carbonyl chlorides of the following substances are mentioned :-phenylglycine nitrile, p-bromo-methylaniline, py-tetrahydroquinoline. diphenylamine, a- and #-ethylnaphthylamine, and Py-tetrahydro-1: 2(N)-pyridinonaphthalene. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers also to the preparation, of the corresponding nitrile from the N-carbonylchloride of dehydro-a-methylindole. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
