Abstract
306,442. Selden Co., (Assignees of Jaeger, A. O.). Feb. 20, 1928, [Convention date]. Catalytic apparatus.-Apparatus for catalytic gas reactions comprises a converter of the kind in which the reaction gas passes through double counter-current heat exchangers embedded in the catalyst, and means for recirculating all or a portion of the partly reacted gases issuing from the converter, preferably after removal of the reaction products and addition of further quantities of reacting gases, and optionally after adjustment of the temperature of the recirculated gas. Gaseous reaction products or diluents may be removed from the recirculated gas by venting preferably through a device for absorbing the valuable materials present. The proportion of gas recirculated may be automatically regulated by the temperature of the converter. Temperature equalizing elements such as metal rods or tubes containing liquids may be embedded in the catalyst. Fig. 22 shows a system suitable for the side-chain oxidation of toluol. This is vaporized in the chamber 80 by the passage of an oxidizing gas over it and the reaction mixture passes through the converter 1 and heat exchanger 81 to the condenser 85 where benzaldehyde and benzoic acid produced by the reaction are removed. Superfluous gas is vented through an absorber 92. The remaining gas, with an addition of oxygen from the pipe 93, is recirculated optionally through the heat exchanger 81 and vaporizer 80 to the converter. The invention is applicable to a great variety of reactions, such as sulphur dioxide oxidation, ammonia synthesis, ammonia oxidation, and organic oxidations, reductions, dehydrogenations, polymerizations, condensations, &c. In particular, the processes referred to in Specifications 300,968. 306,883 and 306,884 are enumerated. The subject-matter of Specification 283,887 is disclaimed. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) extends the invention to gascooled converters other than those having double counter-current cooling. For example, Fig. 10 (Cancelled) shows a system wherein the catalyst is retained between grids in an annular layer 139, in which temperature equalizers 55 are embedded. Fresh gas entering at 140 is mixed with recirculated gas from the pipe 53 before passing outwards through the catalyst. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
