Colour photography; photo-mechanical printing-surfaces.-The colours a, b, c, Fig. 2, of the taking screen are interspaced with spaces d which are neutral and less transparent than the colour elements; and the printing screen has a registering colour pattern the interspaces being either coloured very lightly or left colourless. The screens may be printed from etched rollers prepared by exposing the coated roller s, Fig. 5, to a line screen r, illuminated by a series of sources u in compartments v, through a slot in a front plate l. The lines of the screen r are perpendicular to the axis of the roller, and the exposure slot parallel thereto. Instead of being sharply defined, the opaque elements d may merge gradually into the coloured areas. A threecolour screen, made by a bichromate process with separated coloured areas a, b, c, Fig. 7, may be recoated with bichromated gelatin exposed through the screen from different angles, washed, and the remaining portions d dyed with a neutral colour, e.g. grey. Alternatively the colour elements of the screens may be stepped off by bands of distinct shades.
