Abstract
305,961. Treglown, G. H., and Barnfather, E. Oct. 12, 1927. Vehicle lamps, directing.-In a lamp dipping and swivelling mechanism for vehicle and like headlights, a projection on the swivel mounting is engaged by a stop when the lamp is dipped, thus causing the lamp to be swivelled at the same time. In the construction shown, the lamp support a is carried by a swivel mounting comprising a disc b and depending stem c mounted in ball bearings on a sleeve m secured on a transverse rock-shalt f supported in bearings g. The lower end of the stem c is slotted and engaged by a. spring n, which is non-rotatably mounted in a cap o and serves to turn the lamp to the normal position, in which it is arrested by a stop q which engages a projection p on the disc b. The swivelling of one of the lamps during dipping is caused by a second projection s which engages a stop consisting of a screw t in a lug u on the bearing g. The screw stop t may be employed in connection with either lamp, according to the rule of the road, the off-side lamp not being swivelled. The lamps may also be automatically swivelled in accordance with the steering by means of a shaft v, which is connected to the rock shaft of the steering-gear so as to turn with it and carries two helical cams 1 engaging stubs 3 on arms 2 on the discs b. The cams are so disposed that only the one situated at the side to which the vehicle is being turned engages the corresponding stud 3, so that a left-hand turn causes the left-hand lamp to swivel to the left and a right-hand turn causes the right-hand lamp to swivel to the right. During daylight, the lamps may be dipped sufficiently to move the studs out of range of the cams 1, so that the lamps are not affected by the steering. Alternatively, the lamps may be swivelled during steering by means of a reciprocating transverse rod provided with a pin movable, radially in a slot in a bevel gear meshing with a bevel gear segment freely mounted on the rock shaft and connected by a rod with the steering gear. Specification 303,849 is referred to.
