Abstract
304,961. Soc. Anon. des Usines J. Gallay. Feb. 28, 1928, [Convention date]. Radiators.-In a machine for making corrugated laminµ for radiators, such as for internalcombustion engines, the lateral edges of a metal strip are shaped, and the strip is roll-corrugated during a single passage through the machine. Each lamina may be formed from a strip of brass &c. which in its flat state is double the length of a lamina, being folded about its middle after shaping so as to complete the lamina. The strip may be formed with trapezoidal corrugations comprising body corrugations 4, inclined corrugations 7, and edge corrugations 5, 6 at a different level from those of the body. At each end lateral portions 8 are formed by slotting the body at intervals 77, Fig. 20, and, after corrugating, turning the lateral portions through 180‹ about their connecting portions 56 so as to form at each end a full corrugated surface 5, 8. The completed strip is then folded so that the full corrugations in one part rest intermediate those in the other part. A series of such laminae are then assembled to form the radiator. Through passages 10 for air are thus formed between the sheets 2, 1, of each lamina and passages 11, closed on both sides, for water, are formed between the sheets of successive lamina. Strip metal 28 sufficient to form a lamina is carried by a drum 27 and is fed through smoothing rollers 29 and under a guide 30 to the slotting drums 35, 36. The upper drum 35 has at each side a truncated ring 39, Fig. 7, and an L-shaped ring 40, which co-operates with surfaces 48 on the lower drum 36 and with rings 49 pinned thereto to form the slots 77 in the edges of the strip and to press the metal slightly downward above the slots. The rings 49 are notched at intervals so as to leave the portions 56 uncut. Corrugations of the same pitch as the slots are then formed by corrugated drums 60, 61, provided at each side with rings 70, Fig. 9, having their corrugations 72 at a different level from those in the body. Narrow grooves 73 are left between the rings and the bodies of the drums. The corrugated strip is then fed by a pair of corrugated drums 87, 88 in conjunction with an endless belt 89 driven at a greater speed than the drums so as to ensure a proper feed, through a pair of L- shaped guides 82, 83. These guides have ramps 92, Fig. 13, which are first gradually inclined to bend the lateral strips round the parts 56 as shown in Fig. 13, then assume a horizontal position at a higher level until the strips are bent through 90‹, then incline so as to bend the strips still further and finally assume a vertical position as shown in Fig. 17, wherein the strips are bent through 180‹. The completed sheet is then wound on a drum 102 by a hand wheel. The shaft 63 carrying the drum 61 is rotated by gearing from the main shaft and is in turn geared to the shaft of the upper drum 60, and the shafts of the drums 35, 36 and is connected by chain gear to the drums 87, 88. The guides 82, 83 may be arcuate instead of rectilinear in which case the drums 87, 88 may be replaced by a drum arranged at the centre of the arc. Each lamina may consist of two separate strips superposed and fastened together at their ends.
