Item counters.-In a cash register, for example of the Shipley type, wherein groups of counters such as for clerks and transactions respectively are provided for counting the number of operations performed with use of corresponding keys, the means for operating one group is disabled when certain keys in the other group are used. The various counters are arranged in banks and selected and operated in the usual manner, the transaction counters seen in Fig. 5 being selected by the differential arm 118 and operated by the slotted plate 131 reciprocated by cam 153 through link 147, arm 145 of yoke 144, hub 143 engaging this yoke, arm 141 of the hub, and link 133. The clerks counters are similarly selected by arm 155, Fig. 2, but the slotted plate 156 in this case is operated from the arm 141 through a disconnectible device consisting of a pin 162 carried by a plate 163 slidably pivoted on shaft 164. When a " No Sale " key is depressed and the machine operated, the differential arm 118 is moved to such a position that a pin 180 on it rides upon the high part 181 of a curved plate 174 pivoted at 175 to a lever 172 connected at 173 to a lever 171 also supporting the plate at 177. The resulting inward displacement of the plate rocks the lever 172 counterclockwise and the toe 178 of this lever, disposed beneath a pin 179 on the plate 163, thereupon raises the pin 162 from a notch in arm 141 and so breaks the driving connection to the clerks slotted plate 156. The curved plate 174 may be formed with high spots wherever desired so as to prevent operation of the clerks ccunters when transactions corresponding with these spots are being effected.
