Abstract
302,117. Fairweather, W. C., (Underwood Elliott Fisher Co.). May 10, 1928. Web-feeding arrangements; ink-ribbon mechanism. - In web - manifolding arrangements employing carbon sheets which are retracted from the platen roller after each section of the web has been typed, binding of the carbon sheets is prevented by means such as separate carriers for successively retracting the carbon sheets, starting with the outside carbon sheet. In the attachment shown in Figs. 2 and 6, the carriage 13 is provided with a detachable frame forming an extension of the apron 14 and consisting of racks 22, 23 connected by rods 19, 25 and having split pins 27 for engaging sockets 28 on the carriage. The racks support four independent carbon-sheet 'carriers 36 each having a blade 33 for holding a carbon sheet 32. The carbon sheets are interleaved with a multi-ply web 18 passing over the rod 19 and around the platen 11. The carriers are provided with handles 52, 56, 57, which, to facilitate manipulation, are arranged alternately at opposite sides and are of different lengths. The carriers are contrained by means of ears 37, 38 which engage the sides of the racks, and pinions 40 which engage the racks and are secured to shafts 39 mounted in the ears. The blades are detachably secured at one end to the carriers, alternate blades being secured at opposite ends. The set of blades steps downwards from front to rear, the carbon sheet that is outermost when on the platen being connected to the rear blade. The rearward travel of the carriers is limited by an adjustable stop 54. Adjustable springs 58 are arranged between the rear carrier and the other carriers, the rear carrier having brackets 59 for attaching the springs. A shelf 45 at the front of the platen carries an adjustable gauge 44 on which is mounted another adjustable gauge 60. Web-clamps 47 on the gauge 44 are set and released by rocking a handle 48 secured to a shaft 49 which is mounted in the gauge and has a flat 50 for releasing the clamps. The shelf is pivoted at 63 to brackets 64<a> on the carriage and is turned downwards to afford access to the carriers. When the leading form on the web is in typing position, the leading edges of the carbon sheets are slightly above the printing line and the carriers have moved away from the stop 54. After the first form has been typed, the web is drawn up to the gauge 44 and clamped. The feed-rollers 51 are then released and the carbon sheets are successively retracted, commencing with the outermost, by successively pushing rearwards the carriers. The springs 58 may be of such strength that, after the rear carrier has been retracted, the other carriers are retracted by the springs. When the carbon sheets have been retracted, the leading edges are in the position 32<a>, Fig. 2, so that the carbon sheets are no longer looped round the platen, and since each carbon sheet is outermost while being retracted and is therefore free, binding is prevented. The second form on the web is positioned by drawing the leading edge of the web up to the stop 60, and the first form is then torn off by means of a knife 64 secured to the brackets 64<a>. The blades 33 may have the usual knives 68, Fig. 6, for cutting through the folds of a fanfolded web.
