Wire resistances, embedded and encased. - In making an electric heating unit for an iron or the like by embedding a coiled wire in a plastic material in a metal container, the wire is placed in position by means of a suitable tool, which is kept in place while the insulating material sets and then removed. The tool consists of plate 4 carrying a number of pegs with cylindrical portions 30 and conical ends 31 between which the coils 1 - - 8 of the wire are arranged as shown. The pegs 20 of the outermost row are of semicylindrical form, their flat faces fitting against the sides 25 of the container in which the wire is enclosed. The pegs of the inner rows are of insulating material, such as lava, and may be secured by metal pins 33, the ends of some of which are prolonged to space the wire from the bottom of the container. The tool carrying the wire is placed in the container, in the bottom of which is a layer 27 of plastic material, such as a mixture of alundum fires, clay and boric acid, which can be baked hard by passing a current through the wire. The tool is then withdrawn and the wire covered with a further layer of plastic material which is then baked and compressed.
