Protective arrangements.- Spark-gap apparatus comprising opposing surfaces of electrodes such as 8, 16 have a portion 18 of one of these ininclined, e.g. at 30‹, so that whilst this portion is not near enough to the opposing electrode to cause a discharge to start, it allows a discharge once started to be maintained thereby. The major portion of this electrode may be inclined in this way and that portion 17 of the electrode which lies parallel to the opposing surface may be narrower than that surface. The electrodes are preferably formed of carbon and at least one of them may be supported in a porcelain or other insulating block 14. Fig. 2 shows two such devices held by spring terminals 15 against an earthed terminal 9 on an insulating base 5.
