Abstract

301,348. MacCullum, A. E. G., and Smith & Blyth, Ltd., S. Aug. 26, 1927. Roller-and-breast mills.-In a grinding mill for paints &c. and/or of the kind in which the material is ground between a grinding bar c, Fig. 2, and roll a, one or a number of scraping devices e is disposed in close proximity to the grinding bar for the purpose of preventing an accumulaton of material in front of the grinding bar and/or of cleaning the surface of the grinding roll during its operation. The scraper e is guided on a rod g and is provided with a collar j surrounding a rod h screwed with a right and left hand thread. A double-ended pawl k, Fig. 1, weighted at l is pivoted to the rod e and one or other of the pawls k engages in the threads on the rod h. The rod h is driven by sprocket wheels and chain from the rod n; projections o are formed in the hopper b such that when the scraper reaches the end of its travel the weight o strikes the projection and is tilted so that the other pawl engages in the other thread on the rod h and the direction of motion of the scraper is reversed. In a modification, Fig. 4, scrapers p are attached to a rod q adapted to be reciprocated by a lever t connected to an arm or arms 5 pivotally mounted at one end and reciprocated by an eccentric rod 4 driven from the shaft y by worm z and wormwheel 2. The arm or arms 5 also reciprocate the roller a. In a small type of mill a grinding roll shaft which is reciprocated by the usual cam arrangements may carry a collar to which pivoted links are connected which operate the scraper rod from their upper ends.
