Abstract

301,132. Hancox, F. Sept. 6, 1927. Ornamenting.-Relates to the coating of metal and other surfaces, and particularly to finishing the bonnet of a motor vehicle having a fabriccovered body, so that it will match or harmonize with the fabric covering of the body without being adversely affected by heat. An effect resembling fabric is given to the bonnet by covering the surface with coach makers' filling, applied either by stipp1ing or uniformly, and subsequent1y worked, according to the effect to be produced, and allowed to dry. The tops of the raised portions of the coating are then taken off or smoothed, and the surface is painted or sprayed with colour, varnished, and allowed to dry. The surface is fina11y painted or sprayed with a different colour, which, while wet, is removed from the raised portions only, by wiping with a block of indiarubber. Where the fabric to be imitated is of a raised mottled appearance, the surface may be stippled several times with a mixture of three parts of coach-makers' filling and one part of a paste made of whitening and water. A stipp1ing-device, consisting of a block of wood having headed nails driven into it, is employed. Where the fabric is of the nature of a graining, a mixture of four parts of coach makers' fi11ing and one part of tub or commercial white lead is applied uniformly to the surface by means of a brush, and a pattern is worked in it with a comb. The coach makers' fi11ing may consist of a mixture of powdered slate and tub lead, thinned with size and turpentine. The colours used may be composed of guncotton, alum, and acetone, mixed with co1ouring-matter.
