301,117. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Aug. 26, 1927. Forming silica glass articles. - Relates to a process for making hollow articles of quartz and consists in inflating the fused mass against the wall of the furnace after removal of the heating elements, the furnace serving as a mould to shape the articles. The apparatus comprises a furnace a fitted with a removable cover b, terminals c, d being provided for supplying current to a resistance element g. Tongs e, f, each of which can close around the element g as shown in Fig. 2, are fitted to the upper and lower parts respectively of the furnace. In use, the device is filled with sand and a tubular blank is formed by the heat of the element g in the known way. When the blank is sufficiently formed, the element g, the terminal c and the cover b are removed and an air pipe is inserted in the upper end of the blank. The tongs e are closed so as to grip the blank on the air pipe, the terminal d is removed to permit the unmelted sand to run out of the mould, and the tongs f are closed so as to close the lower end of the blank. Air is then blown into the blank in order to inflate it against the wall of the furnace. The process may also be used with a blank which is formed with one end closed as described in Specification 280,291.
