Abstract

283,174. Quartz et Silice. Jan. 6, 1927 [Convention date]. Forming silica glass articles ; pressing. - A method of producing pressed articles from fused silica consists in heating a silica blank up to a temperature at which the material volatilises freely, and then transferring the blank quickly to the press. The apparatus comprises a furnace A, an hydraulic press B, and a cooling or anneal. ing furnace C. The furnace A consists of a crucible a, which may be made of zirconium or graphite, contained in a casing c which is filled with heat-insulating material d, the whole, being revolvable on an axis e by means of a handle f. The crucible is inductively heated by highfrequency currents passing through a winding b on the outside of the casing and it is fitted with a stopper g having a peep hole h. The press is preferably operated by hydraulic pressure generated by a pump k operated by a motor l. Two moulds or dies m are used and they are operated by opposed cylinders i. The moulds are preferably made of nickel, although carbon or iron-chromium alloys can be used, and they are heated by a gas, ring q or by suitable electric heating means. The furnace C, into which the articles are placed after pressing, is heated up to a temperature of 1200‹ C. by gas burners s. In use, a silica blank is placed in the crucible a and is heated to a temperature of 2200‹ C. at which it volatilizes. The crucible is rotated in order to prevent the blank from sticking to the crucible, and this is also prevented by the free volatilization of the silica in contact with the hot walls of the crucible. The rotation also shapes the softened silica blank. The hot blank is transferred to the press and is shaped by pressure between the heated moulds. The shaped article is then transferred to the furnace C where it is reheated and then allowed to cool slowly. Articles may also be shaped by pressing and blowing. In this case, the silica blank is pressed into a mould t, Fig. 3, by a plunger v which grips a part of the blank against an apertured plate u placed on the mould. The pressed blank, or parison, thus formed is blown to shape by compressed air supplied through passages v<1>, v<2> in the plunger.
