Abstract
300,663. Lilienfeld, L. May 11, 1927. Liquids, gases, and vapours, processes and materials for treating with.-When imparting a silky lustre or a finish to cotton and other cellulosic yarns by the process which involves treatment with alkali and carbon bisulphide, improved effects are obtained if in the treatment there is employed caustic alkali solution of a concentration more than 12 per cent., or of lower concentrations while employing a temperature below O‹ C., so as to produce soluble xanthate, the treated material being subjected to treatment with a solvent for such xanthate in order to remove soluble xanthate at least in part, before the material is brought into contact with an agent that precipitates viscose. Suitable solvents are water, or a solution of a basic substance such as caustic alkali or an alkali salt having an alkaline reaction such as borax or an alkali sulphide, phosphate, acetate or carbonate, or a neutral salt that does not decompose viscose such as common salt, or a dilute solution of an acid such as acetic acid or sulphurous acid. If the material is stretched during the whole or a part of the treatment, there is obtained a silky lustre, and the feel of the material is not substantially affected; if, however, the material is allowed to shrink, then there is obtained a woolly product. Before treatment, the material may be subjected to the action of an hydrolyzing or gelatinizing agent such as a strong mineral acid, or zinc chloride or cuprammonia solution. Specifications 19912/01, 1572/15, 168,575, 216,476 and 216,477 are referred to.
