Drawing-frames; sliver conductors.-In the various processes from carding to spinning, in order to maintain the parallel order of the fibres, the slivers or rovings are passed through compressor guides of hopper formation, the upper and lower faces being inclined to one another and terminating in a narrow elongated slot to form the sliver &c. into a, thin flat ribbon. The guides may be applied at the delivery side of carding-engines, at the feed and delivery of draw frames, at the feed or between any lines of rollers in a drawing-head, or may replace one line of rollers when four lines are normally provided. The guides c, Fig. 2, may be integral with or pivotally mounted on a bracket c<2>, and may be formed with plain in. clined faces terminating in a narrow rectangular slot. The upper portion h, Fig. 7, may be pivotally mounted between lugs h<1> on the lower portion, and may be provided with teeth or serrations to act on the sliver &c. when, or just prior to, passing through the slot. The upper plate may be spring or weight pressed against the lower. The hopper may be provided at its mouth with teeth j, Fig. 11, on both upper and lower faces, which teeth may be opposite to one another, or may intermesh. The guides may be used in a drawing-head in combination with an arched friction plate f, Fig. 3, or a dandy roller over which the roving passes to keep the fibres in order until they are near the nip of the succeeding line of rollers.
