Abstract
300,045. Angell, R. C. Jan. 13, 1928. Flexible shafts, each comprising a core 12 and any number of layers of covering strands 37 the alternate layers of which are laid of opposite hand, are rendered free from kinking, &c. by creating a predetermined torsional stress in the core and by slightly uncoiling or turning back the coiled strands of the finished shaft. In a machine for making such shafts the core spool 10 is mounted in a frame 5 rotated by belt. 15 and pulleys from a shaft 17, and the core is fed through the hollow spindle 23 of a frame 20 carrying the spools 31 for the covering strands 37, 38. The frame 20 is rotated: by belt gearing from the shaft 17, and the strands 37, 38 are led from the spools over guide rollers 45, 46 to the twisting die 42. In one form, Fig. 1, the stranded product thus formed is led to an uncoiling mechamism, comprising a drum 52 which rotates about an axis 64 at right angles to the axis of the frame 20 and also about that axis, the drum being mounted in a frame 53 which is driven by belt gearing 61 from the shaft 17; the drum is driven by worm gearing 63, 64, a spur wheel 67 mounted upon the worm shaft 66 engaging a stationary pinion 72. From the uncoiling mechanism the rope is led to a take-up drum 75. Mechanism for rotating the drum 52 with respect to the rotating frame 53 may be dispensed with, the take-up drum 75 effecting the feed of the rope through the machine. In a modification, Fig. 9, the uncoiling mechanism may be formed integrally with the take-up mechanism, the takeup drum 135 being mounted in a rotating frame 139 and provided with means for rotating it with respect to the frame to ensure the feed of the rope through the machine.
