Abstract

299,940. Blackburn Aeroplane & Motor Co., Ltd., and Petty, G. E. Aug. 25, 1927. Mountings for use on aircraft.-An aircraft-gun mounting D revolves witthin the cockpit on upper and lower parallel roller tracks B, C, which may conform in plan to any convenient shape, such as circular, elliptical, or horse-shoe shape, or parallel straight tracks may be used. The elevating arm H, which supports the gun J on a universal joint H<1>, H<2>, is pivoted at X to the mounting and counterbalanced by tension springs K. In the form shown, the tracks are elliptical in plan, see Figs. 5 and 6, and channel shaped in section to support the mounting on horizontal rollers F, G, and vertical rollers E. The gun is locked in elevation and training, respectively, by a spring pin M engaging holes in the sector M<2> and by a spring-controlled catch L<1> engaging holes in the track B, both locks being simultaneously operated by a Bowden wire L<2> actuated through a roller N<1> by a lever N on the outer end of the arm H. To balance the gun against wind pressure, rollers R, R<1> mounted on bell-crank levers R<2>, R<3> are pressed by a spring S against a continuous inclined track P which is shaped like the tracks B, C and lies between them. The mounting is thus urged against the wind direction by a force which varies with the position to which the gun is trained, being greatest when the mounting is midway between its fore and aft positions. In Fig. 1, the gun and its elevating arm are shown stowed within the fuselage to diminish the wind resistance. Specifications 119,043, 126,364, 128,244, 130,097, 152,368, and 204,070 are referred to.
