Abstract
299,519. Waddell, M., and Watson, H. C. July 29, 1927. Retting.-In obtaining fibre and yarn from unretted flax straw, the stalks are dried to harden the gummy constituents, and to render the woody stalks and seed balls dry and brittle, divided into separate pieces convenient for handling, subjected to breaking or crushing, scutched, hackled, and carded. The fibres so obtained are twisted into a rope or tightly twisted rove, wound on to an open reel, and while on the reel retted by bacteria or by chemicals to soften and dissolve the gummy matter, then treated in solutions to remove and wash away impurities and finally spun by the dry or wet method of spinning.
