Abstract
299,486. Kermode, J. J. June 21, 1927. Spray burners; open-tray burners. -In apparatus of the kind in which oil trickling down an inclined surface is met at the edge by a transverse air current, oil is supplied to the apex (or ridge) of the uppermost number of conical, pyramidal, or, it may be, ridge-shaped shells, each lower shell, which is truncated, being successively of greater diameter, or width, any oil which escapes combustion after cascading over the shells, being caught and burnt in a trough at the bottom. Fig. 4 shows a simple form with conical shells B1 B2 and trough C, the top shell B1 being carried by a central rising oil-pipe A1 in which the oil is preheated, and air being supplied through central openings c10 or b12, and also through scattered perforations b11, lipped to prevent entry of oil. The air passages may take the form of concentric pipes extending above the respective inclined surfaces. This is shown in Fig. 7, which illustrates a form suitable for air supply under pressure. The trough 01 is mounted within an air-supply trough E standing on legs e12 and carries the successive truncated cones B3 &c. and top cone. The upper extensions of the air pipes D1 &c. take the form of loose rings k1, k2, &c. which are detachable so that rings giving correct air apertures may readily be fitted. The trough 01 and the cones are supported by radial projections and centralizing ribs, and the whole is enclosed in a casing G2. A somewhat similar construction is adapted for induced draught. Fig. 12 illustrates the ridge form with perforated horizontal oil-distributing pipe A. Apparatus employing two burners or three burners is described, the former having a common elongated trough and the latter three connected troughs.
