299,021. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Aug. 7, 1926, [Convention date]. Divided on 275,664. Hydrogenation, destructive.-In a process for the destructive hydrogenation of carbonaceous materials in which a large excess of hydrogenating gas is employed in a stream, the reaction is carried out in the presence of catalysts containing halogens either in a free or combined state, preferably in conjunction with the elements of the 2nd to the 8th groups of the periodic system, particularly those of the 6th group. Suitable catalysts are calcium fluoride, molybdenum trioxide with an addition of 10 per cent of aluminium chloride or 10 per cent cadmium chloride; hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid or their salts. The reaction is preferably carried out in a circulatory system, the apparatus being kept free from iron and other materials giving rise to the formation of methane and carbon. Intimate contact between the hydrogenating gases and the reacting materials is obtained by stirring, spraying through nozzles, or treatment in thin layers, or by admitting the gases through a porous plate.
