Apparatus for making filaments ; cellulose xanthates, processes for making filaments from. - Spun threads from viscose are supported on a foraminated aluminium carrier through which are successively forced or drawn the liquids required for desulphurizing and subsequent treatments, the desulphurizing re-agent comprising a hot dilute solution of an alkaline-reacting salt of a weak acid. The threads may be spun directly on to the aluminium carrier and the treatments preliminary to desulphurization applied thereon, or alternatively the spun thread, after preliminary treatment on the spinning spool, may be transferred to an aluminium twisting spool on which the desulphurizing treatment is applied. Suitable desulphurizing agents are the alkali and ammonium salts of the acids of the acetic acid group and of carbonic; boric, silicic, and phosphoric acids; the preferred reagent is sodium sulphite. Suitable apparatus comprises a vat d having a supply pipe e for the reagents and outlet pipes f connected to a pump k. Foraminated spools a of aluminium on which a mass of silk has been spun are piled above the pipes f in the vat, the uppermost spool being closed by a stopper h. The spools are preferably lined externally with felt and are spaced from one another and from the vat by packing g. Reference is made also to the treatment of a cake of silk obtained by centrifugal spinning.
