Abstract
297,853. Nobel's Explosives Co., Ltd., and Morris, G. April 1, 1927. Blasting detonators; projectile fuzes.-Detonators for blasting &c. purposes, and for shells, mines, and the like, are provided with a main charge of explosive of high density by loading the charge into the detonator casing in a molten state, and allowing it to set while in the casing. Alternatively, the charge is introduced in powdered form, and is then melted and allowed to solidify. The detonator may comprise a main charge and an initiating charge, separately loaded. One method of carrying out the invention consists in loading into a tube a dry mixture of 70 parts tetryl and 30 parts trinitrotoluene, melting by heating to about 115‹ C. for five minutes, and allowing to set; a priming charge of lead azide and lead styphnate is then pressed on the main charge. In a modified process, the mixture is poured into the detonator tube in a liquid state. In a further example, instead of using a mixture for the main charge, erythritol tetra-nitrate is used, melted at about 61‹ C. In addition to a priming charge, a lightly pressed charge of a secondary explosive such as tetryl may be used. Specifications 15355/14, 139,811, and 164,362 are referred to.
