Abstract
297,503. Rosenhain, W., and Prytherch, W. E. June 24, 1927. Contacting-solid resistances.-Rods, balls &c. of carbon or metal of a high melting-point are enclosed in a refractory sheath to form a heating- resistance, the air space between the rods &c. and the walls of the sheath being not more than a millimetre and preferably about <1>/10 of a millimetre. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which rods 2 are enclosed in a sheath 1 between end pieces 3 attached by set-screws 5 to metal caps 4. The heating surfaces are more closely spaced near the ends of the tube than in the middle. The material of the pellets or the cross-section of the sheaths may vary along the sheath. Two concentric sheaths may be provided enclosing between them rings or balls, there being only one layer of balls between the two sheaths as shown in Fig. 5.
