Abstract
296,458. British Dyestuffs Corporation, Ltd., Payman, J. B., and Bainbridge, E. G. May 2, 1927. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Naphthol derivatives. - 1 : 8-Naphthasultone fulphonic acids are converted by means of phosphorus halides into the sulphon halides, which are treated with ammonia or a primary amine, substantially in the absence of water, to give 1. : 8-naphthasultone sulphonamides; these may be treated with alkalies to give 1-naphthol 8- sulphonic acid sulphonamides, or with ammonia solution to give di- or poly-sulphonamide derivatives of a-naphthol, in which the sulphonamide groups may be the same or different, and in which a primary sulphonamide group is in position 8. In examples, 1 : 8-naphthasultone-3-sulphonic acid is converted to the sulphonchloride by phosphorus pentachloride, and the 1 : 8- naphthasultone-3-sulphonamide and 3-sulphonanilide are prepared from it. From these latter the l-naphthol-3 : 8-disulphonamide, and the 1- naphthol-3-sulphonanilide 8-sulphonic acid and 8- sulphonamide are prepared. Phosphorus trichloride and pentabromide may be employed in place of the pentachloride.
