Abstract
295,730. Fritzsche, J. Feb. 15, 1927. Blasting fuzes.-Safety blasting fuzes are made with a core of powder in which the reactive ingredients are less intimately in contact than in ordinary black powder. The powder may comprise potassium nitrate and charcoal with or without sulphur (a) prepared by mixing or by mixing, wetting, and drying, but not pressing; or (b) having in loose condition a density less than water, obtained by fineness of grinding, or by increasing the proportion of lighter ingredients, or by the addition of light inert material such as Meselguhr or magnesium carbonate; or (c) mixed with a diluent such as charcoal or finely divided pumice or kaolin. The potassium nitrate may be replaced by another nitrate, the sulphur by sulphide, and the charcoal by a carbonaceous substance such as dextrine or starch. The powder is fed in loose condition, preferably in conjunction with stirring means, and a paper strip conveyer. The powder may be covered by materials such as paper, metal foil, kaolin, talcum, or cement, which are non-pervious or pervious with difficulty to the gases of combustion; or the paper covering may be perforated or have an open texture so as to be pervious to a slight extent to these gases. The powder may be treated as described in Specification 295,406.
