Abstract

295,560. Dalton, J. T., and Wright, R. H. March 12, 1928. Sacks, sewing; thread cutters.-In a machine for packaging tea &c. in which charges of tea are deposited in a longitudinally folded strip of material, the longitudinal free edges of the strip are sewn together, the strip is severed into sections, and the transverse severed edges are successively sewn to make a bag. Tags may be fed to the bags and be attached to them by extensions of the sewing threads. A folded muslin strip x is seized in front and behind the charge of tea by pairs of grippers 205<a>, Fig. 64, mounted on a conveyer. A first sewing machine 280 sews the longitudinal edge x<1> of the strip prior to a rotary cutter 300, 301 severing a bag length therefrom. The grippers 205a turn the severed bag length through a right angle to permit a second sewing machine 328, Fig. 64a, to secure one transverse edge x<2>, the bag length being then turned half a turn to present the remaining free edge x<3> to a third sewing machine 363. In the meantime, a tag T has been fed from a magazine, 379 and positioned adjacent the third sewing machine which sews a thread through the tag before sewing along the edge of the bag. The machine is shown in plan in Fig. 3.. Strip sewing and severing mechanism. The longitudinal edge x<1> of the charged strip is sewn by a machine 280 in which the presser foot 286, Fig. 31, and co-operating plate 285 are arranged vertically and the presser foot is mounted on a spring pressed arm 288 to allow it to be moved aside when the needle requires threading. Rotary blades 300, 301, Figs. 3 and 6, mounted on a shaft 304 and driven in opposite directions sever the sewn strip, the blades being displaced along their shaft 304 by cam mechanism 317 to keep pace with the advancing strip during the severing operation. End sewing mechanisms. The grippers are now turned to bring a severed edge of the strip into the horizontal position ready for the sewing of the second edge x<2> by the machine 328 which is similar to the machine 280. A tucking finner 329 on a spring pressed member 330 controlled by the mountings of the gripping fingers presses the fabric behind the presser foot of the machine which acts continuously, the threads between the bag sections being severed subsequently. This is effected by a rotating blade co-operating with a sharpened edge 345, Fig. 51, on a casing 342, the blade being mounted on a shaft 337. The severing operation leaves two free ends of thread which are successively sucked into the casing 342 and severed by rotary blades 357, 358 coacting with a fixed resilient blade 349. The bag length is now turned through half a turn to bring the other severed edge to the third sewing machine 363 which effects the sewing x<3>. This machine is similar to the machine 328 but works at a higher speed to compensate for the increased speed of the grippers.
